Cerebral palsy refers to a group of neurological injuries that usually occur at birth or very soon thereafter. The injuries result from damage to the cerebrum, the part of the brain that controls motor skills, sensory functions and cognitive thought.
Most children who have cerebral palsy are born with it, though they might not show symptoms until they are 3 years old. These children fail to meet developmental benchmarks and may have trouble learning to walk or control their muscles.
Other common symptoms include a lack of muscle coordination when performing voluntary movements (ataxia); stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity); walking with one foot or leg dragging; walking on the toes, a crouched gait, or a “scissored” gait; and muscle tone that is either too stiff or too floppy.
The condition is also marked by intellectual limitations, hearing deficits, vision impairment, behavioral problems, seizures, speaking difficulties and learning disabilities.
If the fetus does not receive enough oxygen or there are umbilical cord problems, uterine rupture, eclampsia during a baby's delivery or anything else that might cut off flow of oxygen to the fetus, cerebral palsy could result.
